Your Golf Club Update - June

Tuesday 5th July 2022

We had some gorgeous weather towards the end of June, and whilst I refuse to complain, it did get a tad warm at times! I hope you are enjoying the summer weather and like me are crossing fingers and toes that it continues. However, rain at this time of year will certainly help with the new grass growth.

It’s been a busy few weeks at the club, as June got underway with some fantastic celebrations for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

Try your luck in our new golf photo competition by sending us your favourite golf photo taken at the club this summer! We’ve got some fantastic BMW PGA weekend tickets up for grabs. Find out more below.

Bunker Investment Project

It has been great to receive such positive feedback regarding the continuation of the bunker investment project, with work beginning on holes 10, 11 and 12 very soon to hopefully be completed by the end of July.

It’s vital we protect these new areas to give them the best possible chance of good, strong growth and we have now put more ball retrievers in place to help eliminate the desire to ‘just pop in’. Roy will also be collecting non retrievable balls and bringing them to reception for you to collect, honesty box style - thank you to the members who suggested this.

Raffle Winner

Thank you to everyone who bought raffle tickets to try and win a dedicated parking spot for six months. The draw was made on 31st May and the winner is… Steve Duckhouse! Congratulations Steve, I hope you are looking forward to your very own spot in the car park.

For anyone who missed out, the Captains should be running another raffle later in the year for another six-month spot so keep your eyes peeled for details.

New Golf Operations Manager

On 13th June, our Golf Operations Manager Josh moved on to a new role at The Warwickshire – I would like to wish him the very best of luck in his new role which, even though it is called Golf Operations Manager, will be a very different one to the job he did here. Matt Lilley will be joining us on 11th July to take over the baton from Josh. Matt is a very experienced Golf Operations Manager most recently at the Staffordshire. I am sure you will all make him very welcome.

Course Report

While unfortunately Dean is leaving our team, we are recruiting for his replacement as well as an additional greenkeeper. We have also employed a gardener, Craig, which is great news as he can keep the club surrounds in tip top condition allowing the rest of the team to concentrate on the courses.

Our original bunkers are going back to being raked twice a week as we appreciate this hasn’t happened due to the huge grass growth recently – we are back on it!

Irrigation is in full swing (whilst it is so dry) to maintain a strong, healthy grass leaf and root growth, and members of the team are coming in seven days a week just to keep on top of this.

Strike Shack

Remember, if you don’t have time for a round of golf or just fancy doing something a bit different with family or friends, come down to Strike Shack! Open from 7am - 10pm Monday - Friday and 7am - 8pm Saturday & Sunday, it’s a great way to relax or sharpen your game. Food and drink is available from 10am - 7.45pm, and - stop the press - Spicy Chicken Wings have just joined the menu!

Ladies’ Section

29 ladies joined me on an away day to Ingestre which at first felt like a home from home, full of fenced off areas, heavy vehicles and GUR! However things soon settled down and we enjoyed a great day. I was particularly thrilled that several ladies hired buggies in order to play and as usual, the food was simply superb.

Our various ladies’ league and scratch matches and friendlies have been well supported particularly as many people have been catching up on visiting friends and families. Unfortunately, we haven’t enjoyed victories but it’s been great to see the camaraderie and support generated in our teams. We also have new players who are growing their games rapidly which is impressive to watch and bodes well for the future. And don’t the ladies look great in their new outfits!

Men’s Captain Update

I hope you’re enjoying a positive start to the new golfing year and also hope that we’ll get plenty of good weather for the rest of the summer.

On the subject of weather, it wasn’t particularly kind to us for the first charity event, a Texas Scramble. Fortunately, the heavy rain didn’t stop 18 teams playing some excellent golf with birdies and eagles featuring on a lot of cards. Two teams carded scores of 58 Gross with Stuart Barr, Chris Cotton, Paul Mountney and John Nichols pipping Nick Rigby, Jonathan Bartlett, Gareth Newstead and Dean Guest to first prize by virtue of the handicap allowance. Bev Kendall and Paul Mountney took the prizes for nearest the pin.

The event also recognised the 2021 competition winners with a wonderful BBQ buffet laid on by Emma Frow and the catering team. Many thanks to Abi, Josh, Emma and all involved in making the day a great success, raising approximately £900 for our charity, Terrible Titties and Other Bitties.

Moving on, Captain's Day is scheduled for 3rd July. This year we’re dedicating the day to the memory of Andrew Gain, a member up until his untimely passing last year following a brain tumour. The day will consist of an individual and team competition augmented by a putting green challenge and auction – currently we have a spa day, use of top of the range BMW and Audi cars for the weekend, a hotel stay and four ball vouchers. (If any member can assist with provision of an auction lot it would be greatly appreciated so please do not hesitate to contact Fiona Gillespie or myself). All proceeds from the day will go to the Brain Tumour Trust. Look forward to seeing you on the course, in the bar or on 3rd July.

Party Time

Our Zumba and cocktail night has been moved due to so many people going on holiday this month. This will now take place in August, so keep your eyes peeled for the new date

On 5th August the Party Popperz will be here for a night of music and entertainment – tickets will be on sale very soon – unless you have been to a Party Popper night before you will never have seen Freddie Mercury, Prince or George Michael like this – not to be missed!

You Asked, We Acted

  • You recently asked us for more ball retrievers for all those wayward shots into the new bunkers – 20 have been put out this week.
  • You also wanted to get your balls back, so we have introduced your suggestion of an honesty box as mentioned above.
  • You asked for pizza to be put back on the menu – enjoy!
